I've been meaning to get back into the Maumturks for years now, ever since my first visit in Feb '15, and finally in June I managed to get away for a few days into the hills! The trip was made all the more fantastic with the beautiful weather we had- a stark contrast from the moody and dark landscapes we encountered last time during the winter months.
Starting from Mám Éan, we followed the pilgrimage trail through to the middle leg of the Maumturk range. Through an unusual spell of humidity we climbed up to the top of the ridge to find summer-hazed views of both the Twelve Bens and the rest of the Maumturks stretch out infront of us, with the many islands and inlets down to the sea shrouded in a dusky shade of blue. Along the ridge we climbed in a stillness that I've only ever experienced when at the top of a mountain, with only a sheep's call cutting through the silence. From the summit of our highest point at Binn idir an dá Log we then descended out of the dusky haze to see the landscape stretch out before us as visibility improved.
Making the most of the long stretches, the day was suitably finished off with a swim in one of the beautiful white sandy beaches along the Atlantic.
